GeForce GTX 870M vs Radeon HD 4670 1GB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 870M comes with clock speeds of 941 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 3072 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1344 SPUs as well as 112 TAUs and 24 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 4670 1GB, which makes use of a 55 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 750 MHz. The GDDR4/GDDR3/DDR3/DDR2 memory runs at a frequency of 1100 MHz on this specific card. It features 320(64x5) SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

GeForce GTX 870M 110 Watts
Difference: 40 Watts (57%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce GTX 870M should theoretically be quite a bit better than the Radeon HD 4670 1GB overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 870M 96000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4670 1GB 35200 MB/sec
Difference: 60800 (173%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 870M will be much (approximately 339%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 4670 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 870M 105392 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4670 1GB 24000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 81392 (339%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 870M is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX 870M 22584 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4670 1GB 6000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 16584 (276%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
