GeForce GTX 860M vs Radeon HD 4670 512MB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 860M uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 797 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this particular card. It features 1152 SPUs along with 96 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 4670 512MB, which comes with GPU core speed of 750 MHz, and 512 MB of GDDR4/GDDR3/DDR3/DDR2 RAM set to run at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 320(64x5) Stream Processors, 32 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 860M 45 Watts
Radeon HD 4670 512MB 70 Watts
Difference: 25 Watts (56%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 860M should theoretically perform much faster than the Radeon HD 4670 512MB in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4670 512MB 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 32000 (100%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 860M will be quite a bit (about 219%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 4670 512MB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 76512 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4670 512MB 24000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 52512 (219%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 860M is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 12752 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4670 512MB 6000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6752 (113%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
