GeForce GTX 850M vs Radeon R9 M270X

Intro

The GeForce GTX 850M has core speeds of 876 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M270X, which has a GPU core clock speed of 725 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R9 M270X, in theory, should perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 850M overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 850M 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 40000 (125%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 850M will be a lot (about 21%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R9 M270X. (explain)

GeForce GTX 850M 35040 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M270X 29000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6040 (21%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 850M will be quite a bit (more or less 21%) faster with regards to FSAA than the Radeon R9 M270X, and also should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce GTX 850M 14016 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M270X 11600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2416 (21%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
