GeForce 830M vs GeForce 8800 GT 256MB

Intro

The GeForce 830M features a GPU clock speed of 1029 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory is set to run at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 256 SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare that to the GeForce 8800 GT 256MB, which features core speeds of 600 MHz on the GPU, and 700 MHz on the 256 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 112 SPUs as well as 56 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 830M 25 Watts
GeForce 8800 GT 256MB 105 Watts
Difference: 80 Watts (320%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce 8800 GT 256MB is 211% quicker than the GeForce 830M overall, due to its higher data rate. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 256MB 44800 MB/sec
GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 30400 (211%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GT 256MB should be quite a bit (approximately 104%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce 830M. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 256MB 33600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 17136 (104%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce 8800 GT 256MB is a better choice, though not by far. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 256MB 9600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1368 (17%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
