GeForce 830M vs GeForce 8800 GT 256MB

Intro

The GeForce 830M has clock speeds of 1029 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 256 SPUs along with 16 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the GeForce 8800 GT 256MB, which comes with GPU clock speed of 600 MHz, and 256 MB of GDDR3 RAM set to run at 700 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 112 Stream Processors, 56 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 830M 25 Watts
GeForce 8800 GT 256MB 105 Watts
Difference: 80 Watts (320%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce 8800 GT 256MB should in theory be much better than the GeForce 830M overall. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 256MB 44800 MB/sec
GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 30400 (211%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GT 256MB is quite a bit (approximately 104%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce 830M. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 256MB 33600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 17136 (104%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce 8800 GT 256MB is the winner, but not by far. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 256MB 9600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1368 (17%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
