GeForce 830M vs Radeon HD 4890 1GB

Intro

The GeForce 830M has core speeds of 1029 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 256 SPUs as well as 16 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 4890 1GB, which features GPU core speed of 1000 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM set to run at 975 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 800(160x5) SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce 830M 25 Watts
Radeon HD 4890 1GB 190 Watts
Difference: 165 Watts (660%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 4890 1GB should be 767% faster than the GeForce 830M in general, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon HD 4890 1GB 124800 MB/sec
GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 110400 (767%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4890 1GB should be quite a bit (approximately 143%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 830M. (explain)

Radeon HD 4890 1GB 40000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 23536 (143%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 4890 1GB is a lot (about 94%) faster with regards to anti-aliasing than the GeForce 830M, and also should be able to handle higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon HD 4890 1GB 16000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7768 (94%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
