GeForce 830M vs GeForce GT 315

Intro

The GeForce 830M features a GPU clock speed of 1029 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory runs at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 256 Stream Processors, 16 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the GeForce GT 315, which features GPU core speed of 625 MHz, and 512 MB of DDR3 RAM set to run at 790 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 48 Stream Processors, 16 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 830M 25 Watts
GeForce GT 315 52 Watts
Difference: 27 Watts (108%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GT 315 should theoretically perform much faster than the GeForce 830M overall. (explain)

GeForce GT 315 25280 MB/sec
GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 10880 (76%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 830M will be quite a bit (more or less 65%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GT 315. (explain)

GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 315 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6464 (65%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce 830M is superior to the GeForce GT 315, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 315 5000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3232 (65%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
