GeForce 830M vs GeForce GT 440 3GB

Intro

The GeForce 830M comes with core clock speeds of 1029 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 256 SPUs as well as 16 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GT 440 3GB, which has a GPU core clock speed of 594 MHz, and 3072 MB of GDDR3 RAM set to run at 900 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is made up of 144 Stream Processors, 24 Texture Address Units, and 24 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce 830M 25 Watts
GeForce GT 440 3GB 56 Watts
Difference: 31 Watts (124%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GT 440 3GB will be 200% quicker than the GeForce 830M overall, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GT 440 3GB 43200 MB/sec
GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 28800 (200%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 830M will be a little bit (approximately 15%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 440 3GB. (explain)

GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 2208 (15%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GT 440 3GB is the winner, by far. (explain)

GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6024 (73%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
