GeForce 830M vs Geforce GTX 770

Intro

The GeForce 830M comes with a core clock speed of 1029 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 256 SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Geforce GTX 770, which comes with core speeds of 1046 MHz on the GPU, and 1753 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1536 SPUs along with 128 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Geforce GTX 770 230 Watts
Difference: 205 Watts (820%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Geforce GTX 770 should theoretically be quite a bit superior to the GeForce 830M overall. (explain)

Geforce GTX 770 224384 MB/sec
GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 209984 (1458%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 770 should be quite a bit (about 713%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce 830M. (explain)

Geforce GTX 770 133888 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 117424 (713%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Geforce GTX 770 is superior to the GeForce 830M, by far. (explain)

Geforce GTX 770 33472 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 25240 (307%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
