GeForce 830M vs GeForce GTX 965M

Intro

The GeForce 830M comes with a GPU core speed of 1029 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory is set to run at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 256 SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GTX 965M, which uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 944 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a speed of 1000 MHz on this model. It features 1024 SPUs along with 64 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 830M 25 Watts
GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
Difference: 35 Watts (140%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 965M should be 344% quicker than the GeForce 830M overall, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 49600 (344%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M is a lot (about 267%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 830M. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 43952 (267%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 965M is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 21976 (267%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
