GeForce 820M vs Radeon R9 M265X

Intro

The GeForce 820M comes with clock speeds of 719 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 96 SPUs along with 16 TAUs and 4 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M265X, which features a GPU core clock speed of 575 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM set to run at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 Stream Processors, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon R9 M265X should perform much faster than the GeForce 820M overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 820M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 56000 (350%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M265X will be a lot (more or less 100%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 820M. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 23000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 820M 11504 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 11496 (100%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M265X is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 9200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 820M 2876 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6324 (220%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
