GeForce 810M vs GeForce 8800 GT 512MB

Intro

The GeForce 810M comes with a GPU clock speed of 738 MHz, and the 1024 MB of DDR3 memory is set to run at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 48 SPUs, 8 TAUs, and 4 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB, which uses a 65 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 600 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM works at a frequency of 900 MHz on this specific card. It features 112 SPUs as well as 56 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce 8800 GT 512MB, in theory, should perform much faster than the GeForce 810M in general. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 57600 MB/sec
GeForce 810M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 43200 (300%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GT 512MB is much (approximately 469%) better at AF than the GeForce 810M. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 33600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 810M 5904 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 27696 (469%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GT 512MB will be much (more or less 225%) better at AA than the GeForce 810M, and also will be able to handle higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 9600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 810M 2952 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6648 (225%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
