GeForce 810M vs Radeon HD 4890 2GB

Intro

The GeForce 810M makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 738 MHz. The DDR3 RAM is set to run at a speed of 900 MHz on this particular card. It features 48 SPUs as well as 8 Texture Address Units and 4 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 4890 2GB, which comes with clock speeds of 1000 MHz on the GPU, and 975 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 800(160x5) SPUs along with 40 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 4890 2GB should theoretically be quite a bit better than the GeForce 810M overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 4890 2GB 124800 MB/sec
GeForce 810M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 110400 (767%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4890 2GB should be much (about 578%) better at AF than the GeForce 810M. (explain)

Radeon HD 4890 2GB 40000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 810M 5904 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 34096 (578%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 4890 2GB is superior to the GeForce 810M, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 4890 2GB 16000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 810M 2952 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 13048 (442%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
