GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 vs Radeon R9 M270X

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 has a GPU core speed of 540 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR3 memory is set to run at 700 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 32 Stream Processors, 16 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M270X, which features core clock speeds of 725 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R9 M270X should perform much faster than the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 22400 MB/sec
Difference: 49600 (221%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M270X should be a lot (more or less 236%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 29000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 20360 (236%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M270X will be quite a bit (more or less 169%) faster with regards to full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3, and should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 11600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7280 (169%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
