GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB vs Radeon R9 M270X

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB has a core clock speed of 550 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 800 MHz. It also makes use of a 192-bit memory bus, and uses a 65 nm design. It is comprised of 96 SPUs, 48 TAUs, and 12 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M270X, which comes with GPU clock speed of 725 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 Stream Processors, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R9 M270X is 88% quicker than the GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB overall, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB 38400 MB/sec
Difference: 33600 (88%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M270X is just a bit (approximately 10%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 29000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB 26400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 2600 (10%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M270X should be a lot (about 76%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB, and should be capable of handling higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 11600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 768MB 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5000 (76%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
