Radeon HD 3650 vs Radeon R9 M270X

Intro

The Radeon HD 3650 makes use of a 55 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 725 MHz. The GDDR4 memory runs at a frequency of 800 MHz on this particular model. It features 120(24x5) SPUs along with 8 TAUs and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon R9 M270X, which comes with core speeds of 725 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R9 M270X should theoretically perform much faster than the Radeon HD 3650 overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3650 25600 MB/sec
Difference: 46400 (181%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M270X will be a lot (more or less 400%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 3650. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 29000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3650 5800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 23200 (400%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M270X is superior to the Radeon HD 3650, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 11600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3650 2900 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8700 (300%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
