Radeon R5 M255 vs Radeon R9 M270X

Intro

The Radeon R5 M255 has a GPU clock speed of 940 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory runs at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 320 SPUs, 20 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon R9 M270X, which comes with a GPU core clock speed of 725 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 640 Stream Processors, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R9 M270X should perform a lot faster than the Radeon R5 M255 overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 56000 (350%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M270X will be quite a bit (about 54%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 29000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10200 (54%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M270X is quite a bit (about 54%) faster with regards to anti-aliasing than the Radeon R5 M255, and also will be able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 11600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4080 (54%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
