GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) vs Radeon R9 M265X

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) comes with clock speeds of 540 MHz on the GPU, and 400 MHz on the 256 MB of DDR2 RAM. It features 32 SPUs as well as 16 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M265X, which comes with core speeds of 575 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon R9 M265X should be much faster than the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 59200 (463%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M265X is a lot (about 166%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM). (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 23000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 14360 (166%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M265X should be quite a bit (more or less 113%) faster with regards to AA than the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM), and should be capable of handling higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 9200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4880 (113%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
