Radeon HD 3470 512MB vs Radeon R9 M265X

Intro

The Radeon HD 3470 512MB features a clock frequency of 800 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 950 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 55 nm design. It is comprised of 40(8x5) SPUs, 4 TAUs, and 4 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M265X, which has GPU core speed of 575 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 Stream Processors, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R9 M265X, in theory, should perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 3470 512MB overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3470 512MB 30400 MB/sec
Difference: 41600 (137%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M265X will be a lot (about 619%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 3470 512MB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 23000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 512MB 3200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 19800 (619%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M265X will be quite a bit (more or less 188%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 3470 512MB, and able to handle higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 9200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 512MB 3200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6000 (188%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
