Radeon HD 4750 vs Radeon R9 M265X

Intro

The Radeon HD 4750 has core speeds of 730 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 640(128x5) SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M265X, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 575 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a frequency of 1125 MHz on this card. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon R9 M265X should be much faster than the Radeon HD 4750 overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4750 51200 MB/sec
Difference: 20800 (41%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4750 should be just a bit (approximately 2%) better at AF than the Radeon R9 M265X. (explain)

Radeon HD 4750 23360 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M265X 23000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 360 (2%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 4750 is superior to the Radeon R9 M265X, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon HD 4750 11680 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M265X 9200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2480 (27%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
