Geforce GTX 770 vs Radeon R9 M265X

Intro

The Geforce GTX 770 has a GPU clock speed of 1046 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 1753 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 1536 SPUs, 128 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon R9 M265X, which features GPU core speed of 575 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Geforce GTX 770 should in theory be a lot superior to the Radeon R9 M265X overall. (explain)

Geforce GTX 770 224384 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M265X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 152384 (212%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 770 will be a lot (approximately 482%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R9 M265X. (explain)

Geforce GTX 770 133888 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M265X 23000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 110888 (482%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Geforce GTX 770 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Geforce GTX 770 33472 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M265X 9200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 24272 (264%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
