GeForce 8800 GTX vs Radeon R7 M260

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTX comes with a clock frequency of 575 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 900 MHz. It also makes use of a 384-bit memory bus, and uses a 90 nm design. It features 128 SPUs, 64 TAUs, and 24 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon R7 M260, which comes with clock speeds of 715 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce 8800 GTX should in theory be quite a bit better than the Radeon R7 M260 overall. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTX 86400 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M260 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 70400 (440%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GTX is a lot (about 114%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R7 M260. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTX 36800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M260 17160 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 19640 (114%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GTX is quite a bit (about 141%) more effective at AA than the Radeon R7 M260, and also will be able to handle higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTX 13800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M260 5720 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8080 (141%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
