Radeon HD 5570 vs Radeon R7 M260

Intro

The Radeon HD 5570 comes with a GPU clock speed of 650 MHz, and the 512 MB of DDR3 RAM is set to run at 900 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 400(80x5) SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R7 M260, which has core speeds of 715 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon HD 5570 should in theory be quite a bit superior to the Radeon R7 M260 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 5570 28800 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M260 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 12800 (80%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M260 should be quite a bit (approximately 32%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 5570. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260 17160 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5570 13000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4160 (32%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R7 M260 should be a little bit (about 10%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 5570, and also capable of handling higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260 5720 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5570 5200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 520 (10%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
