GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) comes with clock speeds of 540 MHz on the GPU, and 400 MHz on the 256 MB of DDR2 memory. It features 32 SPUs along with 16 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon R5 M255, which has a core clock frequency of 940 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 320 SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R5 M255 should perform much faster than the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) overall. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 3200 (25%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M255 should be quite a bit (about 118%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM). (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10160 (118%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R5 M255 is much (more or less 74%) faster with regards to AA than the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM), and will be capable of handling higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3200 (74%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
