Radeon HD 3650 256MB vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The Radeon HD 3650 256MB features a core clock speed of 725 MHz and a DDR2 memory speed of 800 MHz. It also features a 128-bit bus, and uses a 55 nm design. It features 120(24x5) SPUs, 8 TAUs, and 4 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R5 M255, which features clock speeds of 940 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 320 SPUs along with 20 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 3650 256MB should in theory perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon R5 M255 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 3650 256MB 25600 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 9600 (60%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M255 should be quite a bit (more or less 224%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 3650 256MB. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3650 256MB 5800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 13000 (224%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R5 M255 is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3650 256MB 2900 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4620 (159%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
