Radeon HD 5750 512MB vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The Radeon HD 5750 512MB has a GPU core speed of 700 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 1150 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 720(144x5) Stream Processors, 36 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R5 M255, which comes with core speeds of 940 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 320 SPUs as well as 20 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 5750 512MB should theoretically be a lot superior to the Radeon R5 M255 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 5750 512MB 73600 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 57600 (360%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5750 512MB is much (more or less 34%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

Radeon HD 5750 512MB 25200 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6400 (34%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 5750 512MB is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon HD 5750 512MB 11200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3680 (49%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
