GeForce GTX 460 1GB vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce GTX 460 1GB has a GPU core speed of 675 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory is set to run at 900 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 336 SPUs, 56 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R5 M255, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 940 MHz. The DDR3 memory works at a speed of 1000 MHz on this specific model. It features 320 SPUs along with 20 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 460 1GB should be 620% quicker than the Radeon R5 M255 overall, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 1GB 115200 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 99200 (620%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 460 1GB will be a lot (approximately 101%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 1GB 37800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 19000 (101%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 460 1GB will be a lot (about 187%) faster with regards to full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon R5 M255, and should be able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 1GB 21600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 14080 (187%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
