Geforce GTX 670 vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The Geforce GTX 670 uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 915 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a speed of 1500 MHz on this particular card. It features 1344 SPUs along with 112 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare that to the Radeon R5 M255, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 940 MHz. The DDR3 memory is set to run at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this card. It features 320 SPUs along with 20 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Geforce GTX 670 should theoretically be much better than the Radeon R5 M255 in general. (explain)

Geforce GTX 670 192000 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 176000 (1100%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 670 is a lot (about 445%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

Geforce GTX 670 102480 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 83680 (445%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Geforce GTX 670 is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Geforce GTX 670 29280 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 21760 (289%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
