GeForce GTX 965M vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce GTX 965M comes with clock speeds of 944 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1024 SPUs as well as 64 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R5 M255, which comes with GPU core speed of 940 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 memory running at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 320 SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the GeForce GTX 965M should be a lot faster than the Radeon R5 M255 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 48000 (300%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M will be quite a bit (about 221%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 41616 (221%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M should be a lot (about 302%) faster with regards to FSAA than the Radeon R5 M255, and should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 22688 (302%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
