GeForce GT 315 vs Radeon R5 M230

Intro

The GeForce GT 315 has core speeds of 625 MHz on the GPU, and 790 MHz on the 512 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 48 SPUs along with 16 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R5 M230, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 780 MHz. The DDR3 RAM works at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this specific card. It features 320 SPUs as well as 20 Texture Address Units and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GT 315 should in theory be quite a bit better than the Radeon R5 M230 overall. (explain)

GeForce GT 315 25280 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M230 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 9280 (58%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M230 will be much (about 56%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce GT 315. (explain)

Radeon R5 M230 15600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 315 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 5600 (56%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GT 315 is superior to the Radeon R5 M230, by far. (explain)

GeForce GT 315 5000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M230 3120 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1880 (60%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
