GeForce 8800 GT 1GB vs GeForce GTX 965M

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GT 1GB comes with a clock frequency of 600 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also features a 256-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 65 nm design. It is made up of 112 SPUs, 56 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GTX 965M, which features GPU clock speed of 944 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 1024 Stream Processors, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 105 Watts
Difference: 45 Watts (75%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 965M should perform a little bit faster than the GeForce 8800 GT 1GB in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 6400 (11%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M will be a lot (approximately 80%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 8800 GT 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 26816 (80%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 965M is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 20608 (215%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
