GeForce GTX 965M vs Radeon HD 3650

Intro

The GeForce GTX 965M uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 944 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 1000 MHz on this particular card. It features 1024 SPUs as well as 64 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 3650, which has GPU core speed of 725 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR4 memory running at 800 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 120(24x5) SPUs, 8 Texture Address Units, and 4 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
Radeon HD 3650 78 Watts
Difference: 18 Watts (30%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 965M is 150% quicker than the Radeon HD 3650 in general, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3650 25600 MB/sec
Difference: 38400 (150%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M should be much (about 942%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 3650. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3650 5800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 54616 (942%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 965M is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3650 2900 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 27308 (942%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
