GeForce GT 430 vs GeForce GTX 965M

Intro

The GeForce GT 430 features core clock speeds of 700 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 96 SPUs along with 16 TAUs and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the GeForce GTX 965M, which comes with core clock speeds of 944 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1024 SPUs along with 64 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Both cards have the same power consumption.

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 965M should perform much faster than the GeForce GT 430 overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 430 28800 MB/sec
Difference: 35200 (122%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M should be a lot (more or less 439%) better at AF than the GeForce GT 430. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 430 11200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 49216 (439%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M is a lot (more or less 979%) faster with regards to anti-aliasing than the GeForce GT 430, and able to handle higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 430 2800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 27408 (979%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
