GeForce GTX 960M vs Radeon HD 4670 1GB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 960M has core speeds of 1096 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 4670 1GB, which uses a 55 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 750 MHz. The GDDR4/GDDR3/DDR3/DDR2 RAM works at a speed of 1100 MHz on this specific card. It features 320(64x5) SPUs as well as 32 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 960M 65 Watts
Radeon HD 4670 1GB 70 Watts
Difference: 5 Watts (8%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 960M should theoretically perform much faster than the Radeon HD 4670 1GB in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 960M 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4670 1GB 35200 MB/sec
Difference: 28800 (82%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 960M will be a lot (approximately 83%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 4670 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 960M 43840 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4670 1GB 24000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 19840 (83%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 960M is superior to the Radeon HD 4670 1GB, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX 960M 17536 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4670 1GB 6000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 11536 (192%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
