GeForce GTX 950M vs Radeon HD 4890 1GB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 950M comes with a GPU clock speed of 914 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM is set to run at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 640 Stream Processors, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 4890 1GB, which comes with a GPU core clock speed of 1000 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 975 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 800(160x5) Stream Processors, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 950M 55 Watts
Radeon HD 4890 1GB 190 Watts
Difference: 135 Watts (245%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 4890 1GB, in theory, should perform a lot faster than the GeForce GTX 950M overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 4890 1GB 124800 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 950M 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 92800 (290%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4890 1GB should be just a bit (about 9%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GTX 950M. (explain)

Radeon HD 4890 1GB 40000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 950M 36560 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3440 (9%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 4890 1GB is the winner, though not by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 4890 1GB 16000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 950M 14624 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1376 (9%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
