GeForce 8800 GS vs GeForce 940M

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GS features a clock frequency of 550 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 800 MHz. It also uses a 192-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 65 nm design. It features 96 SPUs, 48 TAUs, and 12 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce 940M, which features clock speeds of 1072 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce 8800 GS should in theory be much faster than the GeForce 940M in general. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GS 38400 MB/sec
GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 22400 (140%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GS is a bit (approximately 3%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 940M. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GS 26400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 672 (3%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 940M will be quite a bit (about 30%) faster with regards to full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce 8800 GS, and also will be able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GS 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1976 (30%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
