GeForce 940M vs GeForce GT 220 GDDR3

Intro

The GeForce 940M comes with a GPU clock speed of 1072 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory runs at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 384 Stream Processors, 24 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3, which comes with a clock speed of 625 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 1012 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 48 SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 should be 102% quicker than the GeForce 940M overall, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 32384 MB/sec
GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 16384 (102%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 940M will be quite a bit (about 157%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3. (explain)

GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 15728 (157%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce 940M is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 5000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3576 (72%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
