GeForce 940M vs GeForce GT 340

Intro

The GeForce 940M comes with core speeds of 1072 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GT 340, which features a core clock speed of 550 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 850 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is made up of 96 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the GeForce GT 340 should perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce 940M in general. (explain)

GeForce GT 340 54400 MB/sec
GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 38400 (240%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 940M will be much (more or less 46%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 340. (explain)

GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 340 17600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 8128 (46%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce 940M is superior to the GeForce GT 340, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 340 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4176 (95%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
