GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 vs GeForce 930M

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 has a GPU core speed of 540 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR3 RAM is set to run at 700 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 32 SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce 930M, which features GPU clock speed of 928 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM set to run at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 384 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 should theoretically perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce 930M overall. (explain)

GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 22400 MB/sec
GeForce 930M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 8000 (56%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 930M should be a lot (more or less 158%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3. (explain)

GeForce 930M 22272 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 13632 (158%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce 930M is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce 930M 7424 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3104 (72%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
