GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 vs GeForce 930M

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 has a GPU core clock speed of 540 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR3 RAM runs at 700 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 32 Stream Processors, 16 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the GeForce 930M, which comes with a clock frequency of 928 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 900 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It features 384 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 should in theory be quite a bit superior to the GeForce 930M overall. (explain)

GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 22400 MB/sec
GeForce 930M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 8000 (56%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 930M will be a lot (about 158%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3. (explain)

GeForce 930M 22272 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 13632 (158%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 930M will be quite a bit (more or less 72%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3, and capable of handling higher resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce 930M 7424 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3104 (72%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
