GeForce 8800 GS vs GeForce 930M

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GS features a GPU clock speed of 550 MHz, and the 384 MB of GDDR3 memory is set to run at 800 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is made up of 96 Stream Processors, 48 Texture Address Units, and 12 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce 930M, which features GPU core speed of 928 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM set to run at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 384 Stream Processors, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce 8800 GS should perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce 930M overall. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GS 38400 MB/sec
GeForce 930M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 24000 (167%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GS will be a little bit (about 19%) better at AF than the GeForce 930M. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GS 26400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 930M 22272 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4128 (19%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce 930M is the winner, but only just. (explain)

GeForce 930M 7424 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GS 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 824 (12%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
