GeForce 930M vs Radeon HD 3850 512MB

Intro

The GeForce 930M has a GPU core speed of 928 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory is set to run at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 384 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 3850 512MB, which makes use of a 55 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 668 MHz. The GDDR3 memory runs at a frequency of 828 MHz on this particular model. It features 320(64x5) SPUs as well as 16 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 3850 512MB will be 268% quicker than the GeForce 930M in general, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon HD 3850 512MB 52992 MB/sec
GeForce 930M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 38592 (268%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 930M is quite a bit (more or less 108%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 3850 512MB. (explain)

GeForce 930M 22272 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3850 512MB 10688 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 11584 (108%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 3850 512MB will be quite a bit (more or less 44%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the GeForce 930M, and able to handle higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon HD 3850 512MB 10688 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 930M 7424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3264 (44%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
