GeForce 930M vs GeForce GTS 150

Intro

The GeForce 930M makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 928 MHz. The DDR3 memory works at a speed of 900 MHz on this particular card. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GTS 150, which features core clock speeds of 740 MHz on the GPU, and 500 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 128 SPUs along with 64 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GTS 150 should theoretically be quite a bit better than the GeForce 930M overall. (explain)

GeForce GTS 150 32000 MB/sec
GeForce 930M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 17600 (122%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 150 is much (about 113%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 930M. (explain)

GeForce GTS 150 47360 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 930M 22272 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 25088 (113%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTS 150 should be a lot (more or less 59%) faster with regards to anti-aliasing than the GeForce 930M, and also able to handle higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce GTS 150 11840 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 930M 7424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4416 (59%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
