GeForce 930M vs GeForce GT 340 1GB

Intro

The GeForce 930M makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 928 MHz. The DDR3 memory works at a frequency of 900 MHz on this card. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GT 340 1GB, which has a clock frequency of 550 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 850 MHz. It also features a 128-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 96 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GT 340 1GB should theoretically be much faster than the GeForce 930M overall. (explain)

GeForce GT 340 1GB 54400 MB/sec
GeForce 930M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 40000 (278%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 930M should be much (more or less 27%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GT 340 1GB. (explain)

GeForce 930M 22272 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 340 1GB 17600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4672 (27%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce 930M is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce 930M 7424 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 340 1GB 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3024 (69%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
