GeForce 920M vs Radeon HD 4870 2GB

Intro

The GeForce 920M comes with a clock speed of 954 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It features 384 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 4870 2GB, which comes with clock speeds of 750 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 800(160x5) SPUs along with 40 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon HD 4870 2GB should theoretically be a lot superior to the GeForce 920M in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 4870 2GB 115200 MB/sec
GeForce 920M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 100800 (700%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 920M should be just a bit (about 2%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon HD 4870 2GB. (explain)

GeForce 920M 30528 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4870 2GB 30000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 528 (2%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 4870 2GB is superior to the GeForce 920M, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 4870 2GB 12000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 920M 7632 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4368 (57%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
