GeForce 920M vs Radeon HD 5870

Intro

The GeForce 920M features a GPU clock speed of 954 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM runs at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 384 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 5870, which comes with GPU core speed of 850 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1200 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 1600(320x5) SPUs, 80 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 5870 should theoretically perform a lot faster than the GeForce 920M in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 5870 153600 MB/sec
GeForce 920M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 139200 (967%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5870 should be quite a bit (more or less 123%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce 920M. (explain)

Radeon HD 5870 68000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 920M 30528 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 37472 (123%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 5870 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 5870 27200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 920M 7632 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 19568 (256%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
