GeForce 920M vs GeForce GTX 460 2GB

Intro

The GeForce 920M has core speeds of 954 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs as well as 32 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare that to the GeForce GTX 460 2GB, which has a core clock speed of 675 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 900 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It features 336 SPUs, 56 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GTX 460 2GB should theoretically be a lot better than the GeForce 920M overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 2GB 115200 MB/sec
GeForce 920M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 100800 (700%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 460 2GB should be much (about 24%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 920M. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 2GB 37800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 920M 30528 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 7272 (24%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 460 2GB is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 2GB 21600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 920M 7632 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 13968 (183%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
