GeForce 920M vs GeForce GTX 465

Intro

The GeForce 920M comes with a clock speed of 954 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 384 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare that to the GeForce GTX 465, which uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 607 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a frequency of 802 MHz on this model. It features 352 SPUs as well as 44 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 465 should in theory be a lot faster than the GeForce 920M overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 465 102592 MB/sec
GeForce 920M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 88192 (612%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 920M should be a bit (more or less 14%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 465. (explain)

GeForce 920M 30528 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 465 26708 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3820 (14%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 465 is a lot (about 155%) faster with regards to AA than the GeForce 920M, and also will be able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce GTX 465 19424 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 920M 7632 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 11792 (155%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
