GeForce GTX 950 vs Radeon HD 4730

Intro

The GeForce GTX 950 has core speeds of 1024 MHz on the GPU, and 1652 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 768 SPUs as well as 48 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 4730, which comes with GPU core speed of 700 MHz, and 512 MB of GDDR5 RAM set to run at 900 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640(128x5) SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 950 90 Watts
Radeon HD 4730 140 Watts
Difference: 50 Watts (56%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 950 should perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 4730 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 950 105728 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4730 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 48128 (84%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 950 is a lot (more or less 119%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 4730. (explain)

GeForce GTX 950 49152 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4730 22400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 26752 (119%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 950 should be quite a bit (more or less 485%) better at AA than the Radeon HD 4730, and also should be able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce GTX 950 32768 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4730 5600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 27168 (485%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
