GeForce GTX 750 Ti vs Radeon HD 6870

Intro

The GeForce GTX 750 Ti uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 1020 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a frequency of 1350 MHz on this card. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 6870, which makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 900 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a speed of 1050 MHz on this specific model. It features 1120 SPUs along with 56 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon HD 6870 134400 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 750 Ti 86400 MB/sec
Difference: 48000 (56%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6870 is a lot (about 24%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GTX 750 Ti. (explain)

Radeon HD 6870 50400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 750 Ti 40800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 9600 (24%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6870 is superior to the GeForce GTX 750 Ti, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 6870 28800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 750 Ti 16320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 12480 (76%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
