GeForce GT 440 3GB vs GeForce GTX 750

Intro

The GeForce GT 440 3GB comes with core speeds of 594 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 3072 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 144 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 24 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GTX 750, which makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 1020 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a frequency of 1250 MHz on this model. It features 512 SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 750 55 Watts
GeForce GT 440 3GB 56 Watts
Difference: 1 Watts (2%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 750 will be 85% faster than the GeForce GT 440 3GB overall, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GTX 750 80000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 43200 MB/sec
Difference: 36800 (85%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 750 will be much (more or less 129%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GT 440 3GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 750 32640 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 18384 (129%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 750 is superior to the GeForce GT 440 3GB, but not by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 750 16320 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2064 (14%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
